A few years ago, I started taking classes at the local community college- (Bucks County Community College). I only take about once class a semester, and sometimes none at all. I've taken film, metalsmithing, and then last year took it into my head to take an Introduction to Sculpture class . I knew that 3-d appealed to me, since I have taken several assemblage workshops with Michael de Meng - I love taking workshops- they inspire me, I learn a LOT, yet I rarely finish my project. With a studio class at the college, I get a lot more time- plus the motivation of a definite due date- something I don't seem to be able complete a piece without.
Last year I finished three pieces, including the spaceship from my previous post. This year I took a 3-d Materials and Modeling class- again completing three pieces- this one being my favorite. For the wood carving part of the class we could choose any body part- internal or external. The carving was a real challenge- apparently the subtractive method is not my forte! , but I got to build a base- Apoxie Clay to the rescue!, and added a faux rust finish - building the base and finishing it honestly felt like a reward for carving the eye. Anyway, enough rambling- I mostly blog for myself to record my journey- I hope you like it, and if you've gotten this far, thank you very much for reading!Laura Spanohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16221682644277299324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456018965620935063.post-46013391269453521492016-01-11T11:15:00.000-05:002018-01-28T13:27:56.290-05:00Spaceship Sculpture 'Refuge' I freely admit I am not a photographer, but here's my attempt to get a good shot in of the sculpture I finished last April, 'Refuge'. I propped it on a card board box and set it up against a wall- probably not the best technique, but you get the idea. It's 17 inches long and 12 inches high. As you can see, it would take quite a bit of tenacity to reach it as it is only able to be entered via a rather decrepit looking ladder. The propeller works - kind of - as one would expect from a ship make of bits of flotsam and jetsam. OR maybe the battery died ? Or my electrical skills need work ?
I started this blog to document my creative journey as I tried different mediums and I've been up to quite a lot actually- ironically very little of my projects have made it onto this blog. Hmmmmmm.....

There is an excellent community college close by - well I don't know about the whole college, but the art department is fantastic! - and in the past I have taken some metalsmithing and film classes there. Last fall semester I took an Introduction to Sculpture class- my first official 'Fine Art' class- a whole semester of sculpture! We made three pieces- one using cast elements, one that incorporated metal and one made of wood. This sculpture is a spaceship. I don't particularly like the photos I have so I'm just going to post some bits and pieces- close ups of some of the what I can only refer to as the hull? And inner workings. And hopefully will be back sooner rather than later with some pictures of the whole piece.

And one of the frame- shaped some wire and soldered the joints for stability- here I have one of my wire mesh panels secured.
I usually am way behind on posting pieces, but this is an exception- I just finished it last week. We both love sci-fi and fantasy movies, Jim Henson and Brian Froud (well, all of the Frouds actually- more on visiting their gallery show for another post- that wasback in 2011- wow! - where does the time go?)

Anyway, I'll keep it short- we decided to theme it based on the movie Labryinth, use Jareth (David Bowie's character) as the central image and to use favorite images and characters from the movie, including shots of Jim Henson and Brian Froud, for the collage. He gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted. My goal was to incorporate as much imagery as possible. The palette just evolved on its own- I don't even remember consciously making choices, although while glazing over Jim Henson's face, I thought it was fitting, as the creator of Kermit, that he was getting painted green. It may not always be easy being green, but I don't think he would have it any other way.
Here's a link to her blog post about the class- Sunday at the Ink Pad. If you scroll down to class photos, you can see me in the checkered apron. :) Her first class was a called Melt Art Madness, which looked fantastic, but unfortunately I was unable to make it. (I did however take a class from Suze Weinberg back in 2009 called Goddess Utee which was awesome, and by the way, the first class I EVER took at Art-is-You. What a way to start my journey! I never knew how much you could do with Utee ) I took the Demystifying Distress Stains and Dylusions Ink Spray Inks with Marjie. What I love about her work is the way she uses bright vibrant color and just the right touches of black to make the colors pop. She's a patient teacher, gives great demonstrations and was kind enough to share her large selection of rubber stamps and supplies. We had so much inky fun! I finished a lot of pages at the class, but had made so many backgrounds that I finished it at home with my little one as helper (studio assistant?)

Here's a pic of Marjie's class samples- amazing- (used with Marjie's permission)

And here's a shot of all the class attendees- notice our smiles- I'm in front with the checkered apron. On the far left are Pamala and Karen- two regular Ink Pad class attendees and wonderful ladies and artists.

And finally, one of me- hard at work- notice the amount of inks, stamps, sprays and who knows what else surrounding me- I'm in the zone here! (Thanks Marjie for letting me use your pics!)

I love getting together with artsy friends and working- its very motivating. Little by little I am filling up my good ol' moleskin that I started working on a few years ago.
Whew! And, being the stinker that I am- I haven't posted about a single one. Anyway, since I haven't blogged about any of them, and I enjoyed each one of the classes a great deal, I thought I would start with Finnabair, a.k.a. Ania Dambrowska. I have been following her blog for many years, so when I found out she would be teaching in New York last July, at Michelle Luxemburg's studio, I jumped at the chance.
We spent the whole day playing, making the front and back covers of a hard covered journal, and several pages inside as well. I'm just going to post some pictures of the front cover for now- but it has everything I LOVE on it- color, texture, junk and a vintage print ( General Tom Thumb and his wife, in case you were wondering) . I had made a brooch back in 1990 with some broken jewelry and that image, and since I haven't worn it in years, I thought it would make an awesome focal point to the collage. I'm going to frame and put this up on a wall, rather than using it as a journal cover. If you want to read about his take on the experience, read Seth's Apter's post here. He proved to be an excellent table mate. (I'm the one on the bottom left, next to Marjie, who also wrote a wonderful blog post about the workshop)
Previously, I had decorated the front of my Moleskin journal and loved it- I loved having a colorful collage to inspire me every time I picked it up. But the back was still plain. I attempted to decorate it, and it was ok, but I love to re-do old pages- they often provide inspiration for a new piece. So here is the result.

The quote is by James D. Finley and it says "Nothing encourages creativity like the chance to fall flat on ones face" - Love that! I am always learning new things and I have to frequently remind myself that its ok to experiment, and yes, fall flat on my face at times- as a matter of fact that is part of the process!

Hope everyone out there is doing well. I am going to attempt to blog more, but right now my main focus is going to be getting ready for Art-is-You in October. I often find myself in pre-retreat chaos gathering materials and stressing myself out. So, I figure if I make myself a checklist and start NOW, I might just be prepared in time this year!

So....here's my calendar page for April. I am so happy that I've been able to keep up with this challenge so far and am loving seeing everybody's pages every month. So much inspiration. I thought I was going to keep it simple this month, but I think I got even more carried away than usual. I have resolved to not buy any more paper, or art supplies (well, not too much at least- I always pick up a few new markers or paint colors here or there- that doesn't count, right?) and I love using things I had forgotten I even had, like the Grungeboard letters and swirls. And some ancient rub-ons from 7 Gypsies. Thanks for looking! Check out everybody's work over at The Kathryn Wheel. And thanks again Kate for this awesome challenge- enjoying it so much!Laura Spanohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16221682644277299324noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456018965620935063.post-19618834675534036802013-03-11T12:18:00.001-04:002013-03-19T22:27:58.232-04:00Crazed Rabbit Page

I just finished making this as part of my Life Book 2013 class. This was my favorite lesson so far. I've never done anything quite like this and am so pleased by how it came out.

Here are a couple of progress shots I took. This was SO freeing. I can see making more journal pages in this style. Thank you so much Mitsi B. ! for an excellent lesson. And this is only the cover! Whee!
I have gotten very far behind, but I enjoyed finishing this up last night. I have a few more details to add, (like my intentions for the year, which I believe is the most important part, heehee) but I'm not up to it. So I'm just posting it as is. Down with perfectionism! (I'm yelling this at myself as I constantly sweat the small stuff) (Like my laptop and scanner still being on the blink :P)
Hello there! I haven't been making much art (well, except for a ceramics class, but more on that later) but I am absolutely determined to keep up with this challenge. This page was inspired by the style of Constance Taylor- I first saw her work on the Flickr Calendar Journal page set up by Kate of the Kathryn Wheel.

Unfortunately my laptop went kaput yesterday- the battery refuses to charge. (could it be because I set it down on some yogurt that had spilled on the table that I didn't notice until it was too late- argh!) So, anyway, without my computer and scanner (I promptly lost the scanner software after installing it into my laptop last year) I am doing the best with my little junkie point and shoot. I hope everyone who is participating in this challenge is enjoying it as much as I am. For some more inspiration, check out Kate's blog and the incredible work of Constance- trust me- if you like beautiful collage work- you will be truly inspired.

Here's my February calendar page. A bit late, but there's been a bit of a crisis over here, so I am actually thrilled to have gotten this done. I photocopied a piece I had been working on for the main image in different sizes and used the rest of the photocopy for the border. The 'February' kind of faded into the background, but I remembered reading what Marjie Kemper did here and cut out a second set with plain black cardstock to back them up and create a shadow effect. Take a look at everyone's pages over at the Kathryn Wheel for some awesome inspiration!Laura Spanohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16221682644277299324noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456018965620935063.post-58739181413845175892013-01-20T11:48:00.001-05:002013-01-20T11:48:08.391-05:00Quote and Journal Page- Three MusesHello! Here's my newest journal page- I love quotes and its been far too long since I participated in a challenge. As you can see, I have a checkerboard thing going on again!. Don't know why but I'm loving it. Check out everyone's work over at The Three Muses.
I am posting today something I finished last week. I have been going back and forth about posting because it is, for me, one of my favorite pieces I have ever made. Not that I have a huge body of work, but it is a special piece to me. sooooooo...... the insecurity started to set in, 'what if nobody likes it?' It's hard to put yourself out there. (I got some perspective when I realized that I don't exactly have thousands of people looking at my blog, and those that do are unwaveringly supportive in their comments)
Anyway- here's my piece. I photocopied my portrait painting that I posted earlier (that was in response to a challenge issued by Art Journal Cafe), and I also photocopied a portion of my November calendar page. I remembered watching Teesha Moore's video, which is what really got me interested in art journaling, and started with cutting up the photocopy to make the border, just as she does in her video with magazine papers. The rest just developed from there.
I got the idea from Traci Bautista, when I took her class (wow, over 2 1/2 years ago now!). She said to make photocopies of original pieces, and then cut them up to make new collages. I remember when I pulled out an original, detailed drawing to use (the class called for bringing various collage papers, images, etc....so I thought to myself 'oh, goody- I have a drawing I can use'.) The look on her face when I pulled it out was priceless. She looked at me like I was bonkers (they do say artists tend to be intuitive) and told me to make a copy before using it. Anyway, here's my original page.

And here's the page I made from the copied and cut up original. I made a double page spread, held vertically.

I even got all fancy and stitched on the pages. I think I will add some black around the white lettering, but if I wait to do all that, I may never post.
So here's my page for January.

I went a little nutso on this page- the background has layers of decorative papers, Neocolor 11's, acrylic paint, gesso, stamps, tissue paper (for extra texture) and finally some spray ink. I knew I wouldn't be able to write on all that texture with a small pen, so for the journaling spots, I broke out some background papers I had made a couple of months ago and then promptly forgot all about. Here's how I made the squares.

First, using a dropper and a willing helper (frog pajamas are a plus), I dripped random drips of ink right out of the bottle onto the paper. (I used Higgins drawing ink onto Bristol paper)

Then, using the same kind of ink, only watered down in a bottle, we sprayed over the first color. We did this a couple of times, spreading it with a foam brush when the mood struck. I think at this point we ran out of time and I put them away, forgotten, until I needed them the other day.

At this point, I cut out the most interesting portions, cut them up into little squares, and edged them with ink. I added random stamping to some of them- here's a close up....

Tada!
If you have read this far- thank you! I'm looking forward to visiting and seeing what everybody else has been up to. If you have a chance, stop by Kate's blog- her year in review post is wonderful! I didn't start it until the middle of the month and B. I just finished it.I almost just gave up- I have a bit of a perfectionist, black and white, ocd type thing going on in my head here that I'm trying to beat. so- rather that not doing it because it wouldn't be 'complete' (that's the ocd) or perfect (that's the other monster) - I decided to just start wherever and muddle through the best I can. So here it is- my December calendar page. Thank you again Kate Crane for this awesome challenge and for all of your inspiration. (if you haven't heard of this challenge, check out The Kathryn Wheel and everybody's work there- so much fun)
There is a video tutorial as well! I'm fortunate enough to have a small stamp block started- I took a workshop at Diana Trout's studio a while ago, and she gave us a little block that we carved- we used it during the workshop and I brought it home, where it promptly got buried under other stuff. Well, I finally found it, and carved up the rest of the block. Here's a picture of it, along with some of the images it creates.

And here are all six of my new stamps. I am challenging myself to use all of the images on my page...

I worked on my `portrait a little more, so here's where that is now...

And then I made a few toner copies of it so I could play with the image, without ruining the original. After adding my stamping with pigment and solvent inks, I added more color with paint, Portfolio pastels and some Neocolors for her face. I got a little carried away on painting the face, and ended up making a hole in the paper right on her chin! So I just got that part off. Et voila- here she is. Its not intentional, but she definitely has a mad hatter look to her, don't you think?

Here's what my workspace looked like when I was done....

I think I'll make another page out of the scraps. :)

I played with masking fluid- i took a watercoloring class many years ago, and just loved working with this stuff. (It's kind of pricey, and I used half the bottle doing this page, but I read that you can use plain ol' rubber cement instead- have to give it a try.

Ok, so I opened up the last page in my handmade journal and painted the whole thing with watered down acrylic paint. After I did that, I painted on random sized circles with the masking fluid. Here's the best I could do photo wise to try and capture the process- the shiny parts are where the masking fluid has been applied.

Now, I pulled out my handy-dandy gear stencil and started stenciling on a coordinating color paint, and then pulled out my homemade spray ink and continued spray randomly all over the page.

So far I have this:

Hmmm.... needs MORE! I stenciled through sequin waste with a contrasting color and added some stamping with purple Stazon ink.

And now its time to peel! , with my favorite lovely assistant, my little girl. Whee!

I did a little reverse masking, since I thought the inside of the circles needed some loving...

(It was hard to catch the action- again, the shiny parts are where the masking fluid is...)

Of course, you already have seen the results if you read the original calendar journal post but here's a little close up :

I'm already eyeing up a canvas I did a few weeks ago and want to change. Rubber cement, here I come!
Today, I found a small pile of old drawings in my closet. Among them was this portrait. I don't remember when I drew this- its reminiscent of a charcoal I did in 1987 that got destroyed when my high school caught on fire (arson). There were a lot of combustibles in the art storage area, of course, so everything that I had done so far that year was destroyed. Maybe I started another to replace it? Either way, I am off to the copy store tomorrow so I can use it in a journal page. The wonderful ladies at Art-is-You have put their heads together and came up with a plan to provide some much needed relief to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. If you go to their website, there is a button to donate- any amount is acceptable and will help. You can donate food cards or gas cards as well. There are many artists donating their artwork to this cause, and if you would like to donate, you will be entered into a raffle to win beautiful one of a kind artwork. One, in particular, Kecia, has created a beautiful painting by candlelight, since she still doesn't have electric. Another, Jenny of Everyday is a Holiday, has blogged about her experience here.
I thought I'd give the Kate's calendar journal challenge another go.Here's a link to her colorful and inspiring blog- the Kathryn Wheel. I keep seeing such beautiful pages, but I haven't created one in months. The problem was writing in the tiny little spaces- so I decided to make a big calendar page in a Teesha Moore style amazing 16 page journal. So this space is approximately 24 x 10 inches.

Update- I am having so much fun with this! ....love how the black journaling adds to the page.
This past Sunday, I went to Manhattan to attend a class taught by Lynne Perrella and hosted by the Ink Pad. I have always admired Lynne's use of color and pattern, and was very much interested in learning some new techniques. Actually, it was her stamps that caught my eye about 13 years ago that first got me interested in collage and mixed media.

(Feel free to skip- Unfortunately, I couldn't sleep all night- I must have woken up every 45 minutes, so I was tired, and anxious, as I am prone to be when I do not sleep well. On top of that there were storm warnings- it was announced that the transit system was going to be shut down at 7 to prepare for Hurricane Sandy, and since I took New Jersey Transit to get into the city, I was anxious about getting out. Long story short, I left early. Before I left the class, I got to have some time with Lynne- she went around the entire room giving assistance (and provided a handout- woohoo!) and she helped me solve a layering problem in a way I never would have figured out. Anyway, I haven't touched it since I left Sunday, but here he is:
